SKILLED TRADES | Exploration for Newcomers

Join our Free Skilled Trades Exploration for Newcomers Program! 

This 8-week program is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and is available to newcomers who are interested in learning more about skilled trades careers in the manufacturing sector in Ontario.

You will learn and practice:

On-line workplace language training

  • Six weeks of job-specific language training related to manufacturing industry
  • Canadian workplace culture
  • Overview of the Canadian skilled trades field
  • Pathways to career in skilled trades
  • Explore manufacturing labour market
  • Canadian employer expectations, standards & laws
  • Job search strategies, resume preparation and job interview practice
  • Connection to employers

In-person, hands-on skills development

  • Orientation to machine theory and practice
  • Introduction to precision measuring tools
  • Safe handling of machining tools and equipment
  • Health & safety in the manufacturing field

Eligibility Criteria

  • Adult immigrants (18+) who are residents of Ontario
  • Naturalized Canadian citizens, permanent residents, convention refugees or refugee claimants
  • VISA Permit holders admitted under a federal caregiver program with a pathway to permanent residency
  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 4+
If you answered “Yes” to any of the above including having a CLB Level 4+ and you are interested in pursuing a career in construction, manufacturing or electrical trades, then this program might be for you.

Program Details:

  • November 11, 2024 – January 17, 2025 (Please note; the October 28th start date has been corrected to November 11th)
  • Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
  • Hybrid: 6 weeks online, 2 weeks in person
  • Winter holiday break (no classes) December 23, 2024 to January 3, 2025

Location

  • Program is held in-person and on-line. 
  • 6 weeks online through zoom
  • 2 weeks in person from December 2, 2024 to December 13, 2024 at 3335 North Service Road, Burlington ON L7N 3M6

What does an Industrial Millwright Mechanic do?
Millwrights maintain and repair stationary industrial machinery, equipment and systems and are often involved with installing, maintaining, repairing and removing equipment. Millwrights also perform routine maintenance activities, such as cleaning and lubricating equipment, adjusting valves and seals, and investigating breakdowns. According to the Job Bank Canada Labour Market information,  hourly rates for Industial Electrician range from 20.00 - 45.00 per hour across Canada.  

What does a Machinist do?
Machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic or other materials to make or modify parts or products with precise dimensions. Machining and tooling inspectors inspect machined parts and tooling in order to maintain quality control standards. They are employed by machinery, equipment, motor vehicle, automotive parts, aircraft and other metal products manufacturing companies and by machine shops. According to the Job Bank Canada Labour Market information,  hourly rates for Industial Electrician range from 19.00- 38.00 per hour across Canada.

Industrial Millwright Mechanic and Electrician are both red seal trades; this means that you can travel across Canada with these apprenticeships.

There are many opportunities for Millwrights; they can work in diverse settings including repair shops, plants, construction sites, mines, logging operations, ski hills and many production and manufacturing facilities – essentially anywhere where machinery is used!

There is free parking available.
 
Can I pursue a career in skilled trades upon program completion?
The focus of this program is to assist participants to explore the skilled trades fields in Canada or to get on the path to a career in their skilled trades profession. 
 
How does Centre for Skills help with my job search?
Participants will receive assistance to create a career action plan and connect them to employers. Participants will also have access to a variety of workshops to help them prepare to job search and work in the industry.
 
Are there any costs associated with taking the program?
There is no cost on the participant to attend the training. Safety equipment will be provided. It is important to note that there will still be living costs associated to being part of the program such as transportation.
